Shirley Roberts, a Together For you Volunteer facilitated by MindWise recently won the Volunteer Project Award for her contribution to partner organisation CAUSE over the last two years.
Shirley provided the following few words:
"I found out about Together For You from Mindwise, as I found Mindwise from the Volunteer Now website. I discovered about the Volunteer Now website when a gentleman from Volunteer Now visited Southern Regional College at Portadown when I was doing my Retail Level 2 course there.
I have been involved with Catering and Activities at Mindwise in Lurgan. I was teaching someone to knit but they lost interest. I then tried to do the cooking but I found it a bit difficult.
I then saw the advertisement for an Administration and Fundraising role with CAUSE which appealed to be because my brother (now deceased) had mental health issues. I have thoroughly enjoyed this role and I won the Volunteer of the Project Award.
I was thoroughly delighted at winning this award even though it was unexpected. I sometimes changed my plans at short notice. This role gave me the experience I needed to get another role at the Lagan Canal Restoration Trust Ltd (changing name to Lagan Navigation Trust Ltd). It is hoped that I will be able to get a paid role in the future.
I also work in a charity shop (separate) and I was able to refer people to CAUSE as a result of my working for them. It has helped me to focus on what arrangements I need to do moving forward as a carer. I now know how to talk to carers who are supporting family members."
Runner up for this award was Peter Edwards, a volunteer with Cruse Bereavement Care. This is what Alex McMeekin said about Peter when nominating him for the award:
"When Peter came into Cruse he wanted to know all about the organisation, and was soon volunteering his time in all of the services we provide: to children and young people; older people, resources for helping people cope at Christmas, and anything else he could help with he did enthusiastically and to the highest quality. He is extremely competent, flexible, punctual, willing and committed in all he does. Despite personal serious health conditions Peter is always pleasant and happy to do what he can for others; an impeccable model of a textbook volunteer!"
As the Together For You project is now coming to an end, volunteer opportunities through the project are now closed.
